Science Sites
The Internet is one way to help learners stay abreast of the vast changes in science. Here are some websites that appeared in Spotlight on Sci-Tech issues in 2001, 2003, and 2005. These sites are interesting and useful for students, teachers, librarians, and parents. Each site appeals to many grade levels.

Antimatter / Mirror of the Universe Learn about antimatter from experts at Swiss-based CERN, the largest particle physics lab in the world. Gather basic knowledge at “Kid’s Corner” before exploring “Everyday Antimatter,” “The Antimatter Factory,” “The History of Antimatter,” and “Live Webcasts.”
C.o.o.l Classrooms Kids can “explore the waters off New Jersey” and predict beach and fishing conditions, help with a marine expedition, view the ocean from below or above the water, and explore careers in oceanography.
Childrens Museum of Indianapolis Design your own space station and gather information about the solar system at this Children’s Museum of Indianapolis site, where users can follow an international team of scientists to the North Magnetic Pole, access audio files, and find easy-to-do experiments.
Environmental Education for Kids Sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, this “electronic magazine” features a “Critter Corner,” offers animal-tracking hints, and presents other environmental education information. The “Cool Stuff” section contains abundant activities, safety tips, and other options.
Kids Saving Energy Watch the characters from the movie Ratatouille tell how to save energy before moving to the games section of this U.S. Department of Energy site. Well-designed home energy conservation ideas and information on renewable energy round out the site.
Periodic Table of Comic Books Learn about the periodic table via classic comic books! Click an element in the periodic table to “see a list of comic book pages involving that element.” Choosing oxygen brings users to strips featuring Batman (who says he is a “human fish” because of an underwater oxygen supply) and other characters. A “Web Elements” link presents factual information.
Quesacon This virtual portal to the National Science and Technology Centre in Australia offers users of all ages a plethora of learning activities. Try arranging 10 children in order by height, add color to dinosaur drawings, and solve math puzzles, among other endeavors.
Sandiego Zoo The quality of the site matches the reputation of the San Diego Zoo. You can observe the animals via Webcams, check out video archives, and download podcasts. Visit the “Kids Section” to find craft ideas, animal-theme recipes, and more. A Spanish-version link is also available.
Windows to the Universe Games, puzzles, postcards, documents, and a science-history calendar are just a few of the resources at this nonprofit science education Web site. This treasure trove is also available in Spanish.
