Walter & Lois Curtis Middle School
Allen Independent School District
August 7, 2013
Dear Curtis Parent and Student,
I hope all of you have enjoyed your summer this year. It seems like it was just a few weeks ago that we sent everyone off for vacation! I’d like to introduce our new administrative team for this school year. Kelly McCollom will be in her second year at CMS as our 8th grade assistant principal. Before coming to CMS she spent time at Olson Elementary and Lowery Freshman Center, both of which were perfect experiences for working with middle school students. New to Curtis this year as our 7th grade assistant principal is Anthony Arnold. He is joining us most recently from Evans Middle School in McKinney. Anthony has many experiences in middle school that will make his addition to our campus beneficial to students, parents and staff members. Lastly, I am moving into the principal’s role this year from being an assistant principal at Curtis for 6 years and prior to that a teacher for 10 years at Curtis. I have a great love for the families and community of Curtis. I look forward to seeing our returning students and getting to know our new students.
The District will send each family an email on August 15 with instructions on how to update the back- to- school forms through Family Access. The forms must be completed before you pick up your schedule on the evening of August 21. If you are not able to access a computer before August 21, computers will be available at Curtis during the “Meet the Teacher Night” for your use. However, please try to take care of this prior to that evening. To further help you have a smooth return to school and to answer a few questions, we have enclosed the following items: (1) School calendar (2) PTA information (3) Cafeteria information (4) SchoolPay information (5) School Supply information (6) Family Survey (Encuesta de Familia) (7)Pest Management information (8) Frequently Asked Questions and (9) Dress Code information.
The school is able to buy school supplies in bulk thus saving you time and money. Therefore we ask parents to pay a $25 school supply fee. The school agenda book is included in this price. (Agenda books will be available for separate purchase for $5.00 now and throughout the year.) The teachers will be given class sets of the purchased supplies. The purchased supplies will include colored paper, composition books, markers, map pencils, batteries, glue sticks, scissors, rulers, index cards, tissues, etc. You have the option of paying for these items through the online Web store which is accessible through the district website or the Curtis website or personally on “Meet the Teacher” night. We ask that you supply pens, pencils and notebook paper throughout the school year.
This year all 7th grade ELA and Pre-AP ELA students will be reading the novel “Tangerine” in the fall. Please make arrangements to purchase a copy of the novel by September 16. The novel costs about $6.00 and can be found in local bookstores.
Middle schools do not issue student hallway lockers. Teachers will be utilizing classroom sets of books. Some textbooks are accessed online. Your student will not be expected to carry books from class to class each day. Therefore, a small backpack/back sack is recommended. Bigger is not necessarily better! A typical backpack might carry a binder, spiral notebook, pen, pencil, colored folders and a lunch.

We have an excellent webpage that is accessed via www.allenisd.org using the school web sites portal. Please visit this page weekly for school information updates. Do complete a volunteer background check online at www.allenisd.org. It takes about five days to receive clearance. The background check is good from June 15, 2013 through June 2014 and must be done every school year. All volunteers and chaperones must have a current background check to volunteer, go on field trips or work with students in the building.
There are a few items that are important to remember for the year:
