Math Vocabulary Terms - L Through Z
Left – A direction. Also used to describe how many objects or a number that remains after a quantity has been taken away.

Length – The distance along something from end to end, or the time something lasts from beginning to end.

Less Likely Than - A phrase used to describe the chance that an event will occur is not as likely as another event.

Less Than – One number has a smaller value than another number. The symbol for less than is:

Line of Symmetry – A line that divides a figure into two halves that are exactly alike.

Liter – A basic metric unit for measuring liquid.

Mass – Quantity of matter in an object.

Measure – Using standard units to find out size or quantity in regard to length, width, height, area, mass, perimeter, weight, volume, capacity, temperature, or time.

Meter – A basic metric unit for measuring length and distance. It is about the width of a door.

Millimeter – A standard metric unit for measuring length. Ten of these are equal to one centimeter, and one thousand of these is equal to one meter. It is about the width of the point on your pencil.

Minute - A unit of time that is equal to 60 seconds.

Month - A unit of time. There are twelve of these in a year.

More Likely Than – A phrase used to describe the chance that an event will occur is greater than another event.

More Than – A larger amount, number, or quantity.

Multiples – Numbers that are in that number’s times table, and divisible by that number with no remainder.

Multiply – A mathematical operation where a number is added to itself a number of times.

Nickel – A coin used in the United States that is worth 5 cents, or 5 pennies.

Number Line – A line used to show numbers in order from least to greatest.

Number Sentence – An equation that is formed with numbers and mathematical symbols.

Numerator – The part of a fraction, above the line of a fraction, that stands for how many parts of a whole or group are included in the fraction.

Octagon – A closed figure with eight sides.

Odd Number – A number that cannot be evenly divided by 2. These are numbers that have 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 in the ones place value.

Ones – The value of 1.

Operation – A mathematical process such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ounce – A customary unit for measuring weight. It takes 16 of these to equal a pound.

Paired Numbers – A set of numbers found in a table.

Parallel – Lines in the same plane that are the same distance apart and do not intersect.

Pattern – Things that happen over and over again. A repeated design or recurring sequence.

Penny – A coin used in the United States that is worth 1 cent.

Pentagon – A closed figure with five sides.

Perimeter – The distance around a figure.

Pint – A customary unit for measuring capacity. It is equal to the following: 16 fluid ounces and 2 cups. It takes 2 of these to make a quart, and 8 of these to make a gallon.

Place Value – The amount that each digit stands for in a number.

Point – A position in space, or a position on a number line.

Pound – A customary unit for measuring weight. It is equal to 16 ounces.

Product – The result of multiplying two or more numbers.

Pyramid – A solid figure that has triangles for its sides and a closed figure as its base.

Quart – A customary unit for measuring capacity. It is equal to the following: 32 fluid ounces, 4 cups, and 2 pints. It takes four of these to make a gallon.

Quarter – A coin used in the United States that is worth 25 cents, or 25 pennies.

Quotient – The result of dividing one number by another; the solution to a division problem.

Reasonable – An answer that is neither extreme nor excessive, and make sense.

Rectangle – A four-sided closed figure with four equal angles, and two pairs of equal parallel sides.

Rectangular Prism – A geometric figure with six rectangular faces.

Round – Change a number to a more convenient value.

Second - A standard unit of time. It takes 60 of these to equal 1 minute.

Side – The line on the edge of a shape.

Sphere – A geometric figure made up of a set of points forming a curved figure. It is similar to a ball.

Square – A four-sided closed figure with all four sides equal and all four angles equal.

Square Pyramid – A solid figure that has 5 faces, 1 face that is square, and 4 faces that are triangles.

Subtract - To take one quantity away from another.

Sum – The total of two or more numbers being added.

Table - Mathematical information organized in columns and rows.

Tally Chart – A table of information that uses tally marks to show information.

Temperature – A measure of how hot or cold something is.

Ten Thousands – The value of 10,000. Equal to ten groups of one thousand.

Tens - The value of 10. The place value to the left of the ones place.

Thermometer – An instrument for measuring temperature.

Thousands – 1,000; equal to ten groups of one hundred.

Total - The sum or whole amount.

Triangle – A three-sided closed figure with three angles.

Triangular Prism – A solid with 5 faces. 2 of the faces are triangles and 3 of the faces are rectangles.

Vertex – The point where three faces of a geometric figure meet; a corner.

Vertical – A figure or line that is north to south, up and down, top to bottom.

Volume – The amount of space an object takes up. It is usually measured in cubic units.

Week – A unit of time equal to 7 days.

Weight – The mass of the object times the force of gravity.

Yard – A customary unit for measuring length and distance. It is equal to both 36 inches and 3 feet. It is about the width of a door.

Year - The time it takes the earth to completely orbit the sun, equal to 12 months, 52 weeks, or 365 ¼ days
