| If you want to see kids get excited about reading, let them choose their own books and talk about them in groups. That's the basic idea behind Literature Circles, or Book Clubs. Kids who tell me that they don't like reading find themselves looking forward to their weekly meetings with an anticipation that surprises them! It so much fun to watch the transformation. I've experimented with Literature Circles for over 12 years and I've found that I am STILL LEARNING!!! The kids teach me something new every year. Enough from me.... here is what the kids have to say... "Literature Circles are important because you get to hear what other people are feeling, you know, and what they think. And they're the ones that help you to change your mind, 'cause of what they said. It's fun to discuss books and see what everybody else feels." 2003 Green 6th grader "I had a good time with my discussion group... I liked what we were talking about and we got really into it. We all had a lot of comments on everything." 2004 Green 6th grader "I like the group thing better that the whole class because there's not as many people that have to talk so you can talk more or let other people talk more... I just like it better because it never gets boring and each person has more time to talk and you can explain things better." 2005 Green 6th grader "I like that you have more freedom in Literature Circles. The teacher isn't just handing you a worksheet to do... you get a goal to meet and a deadline... then it is up to you with what you're going to do. When our group meets, our assignments all look different and it is fun to see what the other guys thought was important." 2006 Green 6th grader |
