| Tidbits from Mrs. Ryan • I was excited to run into Kayla at the Allen Public Library on Thursday. • Mrs. Gunn has introduced our class to the Bluebonnet Reading Program. Ask your child about it. If your child has read or someone has read to him/her at least 5 of the books on the 2008 nominated list….he/she will be eligible to VOTE at the Bluebonnet Voting Party at the end of the year! • Mrs. Nelson taught our class a lesson on Lewis and Clark • Mrs. Stillo came in and spoke about “bullying.” She reminded them to use “I” statements when talking to someone in a conflict situation. Ask your child about the book she read to the class. • from The Reading Zone by Nancie Atwell : There is no more important homework than reading. Research shows that the highest achieving students are those who devote leisure time to reading, even when the school day and year are only mid-length and homework isn’t excessive. Recently, the largest-ever international study of reading found that the single most important predictor of academic success is the amount of time children spend reading books, more important even than economic or social status. And one of the few predictors of high achievement in math and science is the amount of time children devote to pleasure reading. • Mrs. Crist came by on Monday and played a math “Twenty or Bust” with the class. That was fun! • Fire Safety Bookmark Winners Did you know that our class has a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winner? YAHOO! They are Billy, Nikki, and Danielle! Beginning the second 6-week period I will be looking at the following for assessing reading and written language: 1. The reading sheets that are completed at home and filed in the yellow folders. This is how you relay to me that your child is reading at home. 10 forms will be sent today. Request more as needed. 2. Readers’ Response Spirals (most are black) that should be handed in weekly on assigned day. So…if your child completes homework early, please ask to see the yellow folder or Reader Response spiral. They are allowed to bring them home. Thanks. • I am in the process of setting up conferences. |
