Music at Anderson Elementary School is a program designed to equip students with the skills necessary for musical understanding and enjoyment. Through active participation in the music making process, students learn to:

·Read and notate music
Listen to, analyze, and describe music
·Sing and perform a varied repertoire of music
·Improvise melodies, variations and accompaniments
·Compose and arrange music within specified guidelines
·Understand music in relation to history, culture and the other arts
·Evaluate music and music performances

Students currently attend music class once a week for 45 minutes. Speech, song, and instrumental playing are integrated to teach the elements of music. Small percussion, Orff melody instruments (xylophones and glockenspiels), and recorders (4th and 5th grades) are played in ensemble in a non-competitive atmosphere where one of the rewards is the pleasure of making good music with others.

Performance opportunities are available to all students at Anderson Elementary School. Grade level performances and special events such as VIP Day feature the musical talents of students and showcase learning that takes place in the music classroom. In addition, 6th grade students may elect to participate in the elementary choral program that provides numerous performance opportunities throughout the year.

Cheryl Goodwin is the music specialist at Anderson Elementary. She brings twenty-three years of experience in the music classroom. She holds a Master of Education from Xavier University and a Bachelor of Music Education from Morehead State University. She received her Orff-Schulwerk certification (Levels I-III) from the University of Cincinnati and Kodaly certification (Levels I-III) from the University of North Texas. Mrs. Goodwin is the mother of two children: a senior at Allen HS and a 9th grader and Lowery Freshman Center. Mrs. Clark is the Instructional Assistant in the music room. She was a 1st grade teacher at Kerr Elementary for several years. She has chosen to return to education after a year's absence and we are happy to have her at Anderson!
