Natalie McDaniel's Web Page

Welcome to Mrs. McDaniel's webpage! I teach 5th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. If you need to reach me with any questions or concerns about our class or your child, I can best be reached by email: natalie_mcdaniel@allenisd.org. Non-emergency phone calls will be directly routed to my voicemail and I can return phone calls during my conference time. I am available for meetings during my conference time, which is 8:55-9:40, or after school, from 3:15-3:45. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your child's life, and check back often - I try to keep this page updates with information.

There are some activities that we will do each week. One of these is Daily Oral Geography, otherwise known as DOG. Monday - Wednesday, your child will be answering 3 geography questions each day. Then, I show the answers on the overhead and we discuss them. On Thursday, we review for the week, and a quiz is given on Friday.

Literacy Stations are also a weekly activity. Typically, we have seven stations:
Reading
Buddy Reading
Social Studies
Writing
Computer
English
Spelling
Your child is expected to turn in their completed stations work by the end of the day each Friday. Late work is only accepted on Mondays, with a ten point deduction per station. Beyond Monday, your child can only score a maximum of 70 on each station. I tell my classes that they should average completing 1.5 stations per day in order to finish on Friday, so they should monitor themselves and take home any work necessary to stay caught up. They are also welcome to stay in study hall during recess any day that they need extra time. Each day, I give an average of 45 minutes for work in stations, during which the students are expected to independently choose and work on the activities. I am available during that time to answer questions and help them think through the activities.
ART TO GO:
We have a wonderful parent volunteer, Mrs. Marsh, who comes in the second Wednesday of each month to present Art To Go. This is a really cool program which educates students on different art topics that often tie into curriculum. They are shown props and examples of art pieces from the genre of the month. It is very interesting and interactive.
