| Current Events Assignment |
| Current Events Why do we do current events? 1. To develop an understanding of events which are shaping our world today 2. To improve our reading comprehension 3. To improve our ability to communicate clearly through writing 4. To improve our public speaking skills What do you need to do to be prepared? 1. Select an article from a newspaper or a magazine, at least 5 paragraphs long. (No internet articles, please - newspapers will be available in class – see the teacher if you need an article.) 2. Make sure that it is an appropriate subject for a current event. 3. Read it several times to make sure you understand what it is about. 4. Choose 5 paragraphs that contain the most important information. If the article is really long, choose some at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. 5. Write your rough draft, have it edited (proofread by friend or parent) and then neatly write (in ink) or type your final copy. 6. Read it out loud to yourself until you are familiar with it (in front of the mirror-good place to practice) and can present it as you are expected to. 7. Come to class prepared: staple assignment (with article on bottom, rough draft in the middle and final copy on the top) and be ready to present orally when called upon. How do I summarize a current event article? 1. Find 5 good paragraphs in your article. Underline 1 sentence in each paragraph. 2. On your paper, write at least 3 introductory sentences. The first sentences should give the name of the article, where you found it (name of newspaper or magazine) and the date of it. The next sentences should grab your audience using one of the grabber lead tactics discussed in LA. These 3 sentences make up paragraph 1. 3. Then summarize the 5 underlined sentences from your article into your own language. Make it sound mature enough to hold your reader’s/listener’s attention. These 5 sentences will be the second paragraph of your current event. 4. Finally, write your conclusion, in which you give your opinion of the article. This 3rd and final paragraph will have only 3 sentences. 5. The current event will have 3 paragraphs (total of 11 sentences) as discussed above. 6. You should turn in the article, your rough draft and your final draft. Rough draft may be done in pencil or ink. Final draft should be in ink pen or typed – your choice.
