![]() Texas Education Agency rules require all teachers of gifted students to complete a one-time 30-hour sequence (“Basic 30”) of staff development on education of the gifted student. After this sequence has been completed, an annual 6-hour update is required. Training must be completed in the following areas: • Nature and Needs of G/T Learner • Identification and Assessment • Social and Emotional Needs of G/T Learner • Creativity and Instructional Strategies • Differentiated Curriculum These rules apply to the teachers listed below. The “basic 30 clock hours” requirement must be completed within 12 months of assignment to teach gifted students. • All elementary teachers who teach English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies to identified gifted students. • All secondary teachers who teach PreAP, AP, PreIB, or IB classes in English, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies. In addition, all teachers in 7th and 8th grades who teach English, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies to identified gifted students. NOTE 1: If these teachers have taken the five-day IB Training or College Board Training, TEA will count 12 hours toward their “Basic 30”. They are responsible for getting an additional 18 hours in gifted education to consist of: Nature and Needs of the Gifted, Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted, and Identification and Assessment. NOTE 2: If these teachers have attended the Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade or Fourth Grade Boot Camp training, TEA will count 12 hours toward their “Basic 30”. They are responsible for getting an additional 18 hours in gifted education to consist of: Nature and Needs of the Gifted, Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted, and Identification and Assessment. In addition, all counselors and administrators who are responsible for scheduling and administering a program/classes for the gifted are responsible for attending a one time 6-hour training to include: Nature and Needs of the Gifted. To assist teachers in meeting these state requirements, two G/T Institutes will be held 2 weeks during the summer. In addition to these summer institutes, other summer workshops count toward the G/T hour requirement. Our department will also offer opportunities throughout the school year for G/T related sessions.
