Great Expectations Poems

A Great Somebody

I am a serious child.
I am a serious child with serious goals.
My life is destined to be filled with positivity.

I am a worker.
If it takes hard work to reach my goal,
I will do it.

I am a clean somebody.
I know that if I lie down with hogs,
I can come up with mud,
So I will work to keep my mind, my body,
And my character clean.

I am intelligent.
My brain is a storage place.
I will fill it to the brim with knowledge,
And look forward with hope of what
Tomorrow will bring.

I am a child hero.
I don’t spend time wasting time
Because I know there’s room at the top for me.

I am the greatest somebody there is.
Start leading me now, Teacher.
Start guiding me now, Teacher.
Start praising me now, Teacher.
And you will see me rise to the highest heights.

~Adrienne Sealy Hardesty

Today

Outside my window, a new day I see,
And only I can determine
What kind of day it will be.

It can busy and sunny, laughing, and gay,
Or boring and cold, unhappy and gray.
My own state of mind is the determining key,
For I am only the person I let myself be.

I can be thoughtful and do all I can to help,
Or be selfish and think just of myself.
I can enjoy what I do and make it seem fun,
Or gripe and complain and make it hard on someone.

I can be patient with those who may not understand,
Or belittle and hurt them as much as I can.
But I have faith in myself, and believe what I say,
And personally intend to make the best of each day.

Equipment

Figure it out for yourself, my lad,
You’ve all that the greatest of men have had,
Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes
And a brain to use if you would be wise.
With this equipment they all began,
So start for the top and say, “I can.”

Look them over, the wise and great,
They take their food from a common plate,
And similar knives and forks they use,
With similar laces they tie their shoes,
The world considers them brave and smart,
But you’ve all they had when they made their start.

You can triumph and come to skill,
You can be great if you only will.
You’re well equipped for what fight you choose,
You have legs and arms and a brain to use,
And the man who has risen great deeds to do
Began his life with no more than you.
You are the handicap you must face,
You are the one who must choose your place,
You must say where you want to go,
How much you will study the truth to know.
---------------------------------------------

Courage must come from the soul within,
The man must furnish the will to win.
So figure it out for yourself, my lad.
You were born with all that the great have had;
With your equipment they all began.
Get hold of yourself and say, “I can.”

How Long Does it Take to Learn?

How long does it take to learn
To bait a hook with a wiggle worm,
To make a bed, to wash a plate,
To swim, to dive, to figure skate,
To iron a shirt, to mend a seam,
To walk with balance on a beam?

How do you think grown-ups know
The way to dance, to paint, or sew?
They were all once children, too,
Learning skills that were brand new.
They felt tired, they got mad –
Sometimes, their moods were very bad!

Anytime you learn a skill,
It’s like climbing a steep hill.
Stumbles, scrapes, a few Oh, no’s.
Accept them as your talent grows.
With practice, you’ll see, bit by bit,
You’re getting better – so don’t quit!

I Am Bright

I am bright, there is nothing I cannot do.
Yesterday’s failures are behind me,
Tomorrow’s successes are yet before me,
And I will make today the very best day of all,
For this day begins the rest of my life.

I refuse to let others predict what I may become.
I alone hold my destiny in my own hands.
The station of my life is too precious
To give to others to handle for me.

I will aid my teacher in every way possible
To ensure that my life is on the right track.
I realize that if I want to succeed
That the first step must truly be my own.

Likewise, I realize that if I want to fail,
That, too, is my choice.
I agree that should I select to fail,
I do not have the right to take my teachers
And other people with me.

Keep A Goin’

If you strike a thorn or rose,
Keep a goin’!
If it hails or if it snows,
Keep a goin’!
‘Taint no use to sit and whine
When the fish ain’t on your line’
Bait your hook and keep a tryin’-
Keep a goin’!

When the weather kills your crop,
Keep a goin’!
Though ‘tis work to reach the top.
Keep a goin’!
S’pose you’re out o’ every dime-
Gittin’ broke ain’t any crime.
Tell the world you’re feelin’ prime-
Keep a goin’!

When it looks like all is up,
Keep a goin’!
Drain the sweetness from the cup,
Keep a goin’!
See the wild birds on the wing,
Hear the bells that sweetly ring.
When you feel like sighing, sing-
Keep a goin’!
