Our "original" spelling list will continue with a phonics based word list. A pretest will be offered to determine which children have already mastered these words. If a child scores a 100, than he will be assigned an alternate list. Although the list will be different, the homework will be consistent with the regular spelling assignment. We will also study vocabulary based spelling list based on social studies, science and math vocabulary terms. In addition, I will be broadening your child's spelling assignments to include vocabulary words from literature as well. The vocabulary based test will not be weekly and your child will have over a week to prepare for the quiz. The "new" spelling test will be vocabulary based on your child's current reading assignment. The list of words will vary in class depending on what literature your child is reading at that time. The list will contain approximately 10-12 words. Look for the lists in your child's homework folder and check his agenda for quiz dates. I will tell the children several days in advance when I plan to give the quiz. If combined with a vocabulary quiz, your child will receive two grades. A spelling grade for spelling and a vocabulary grade for reading. |
