Tidbits #2
Tidbits from Mrs. Ryan

1. Once I receive all the conference forms, I will begin setting up those dates/times. They will not begin until about mid-October and they’ll run though November. If you wish to confer earlier…just send me a note or e-mail.

2. Special thanks to Mrs. Tommaney and Mrs. Silander – they covered about 100 classroom textbooks!

3. VERY IMPORTANT – One area I covered on Curriculum Night was the parent-teacher connection with reading. Here is what you need to know:
• Once a week your child is expected to hand in his/her READER’S RESPONSE journal. Your child has an assigned day. This is very important.
• Your child may take home as many book forms as are needed. This is what tells me that your child is reading independently at home. They are completed, checked, and placed in a yellow folder.
• If your child visits the Allen Public Library, have your child jot me a note. I will let your child know how impressed I am. One of the characteristics of a “good reader” is that he/she practices.
If you recall the sheet I sent on independent reading…research shows there is a HIGH correlation between independent reading and achievement.

4. Ask your child… What is schema? Is it ever OK to abandon a book? Who is Patricia Polacco? What are physical properties? What do good readers do? What is Vocabulary Dip? What is expanded notation? Who is your pen-pal? What is UPSL?
