Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a reading program that has been in place at Green Elementary for several years. This reading program has been utilized more with the passing of each year. Accelerated Reader (AR) encourages students to read books on their appropriate reading level for information, enjoyment, and comprehension. With the completion of a book, children take a 5 to 20 question comprehension test and receive a score for the questions answered correctly.

Reading Level

At the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of each school year, each student will be given a test to determine their READING level. This may or may not be the grade level. The books in our library are coded as to the reading level by pink stickers and colored dots (i.e. red dot indicates first grade and the pink sticker 1.5 tells that the book is for students reading approximately halfway between first and second grade). There are numerous posters about the Media Center that tell students the meaning of the colored stickers.

Number of Points

Along with the reading level on the pink sticker, is the number of points possible a student can receive if they get 100% on the comprehension test (i.e. .5=one-half point and 5.0=five points). Reading tags are given to reward students for the points they have accumulated throughout the year. Our goal is to have students become life-long readers.

Scores

Once a student takes a test, the score is used in several ways. The teacher will determine at what reading level the student should be. With consistent tests at 100%, a student should move to a higher reading level. If a student begins to get scores 80% or less, the reading level is (1) too difficult for the student or (2) the student did not read for comprehension, and therefore, should read the next book more thoroughly.

The Allen Public Library also has a current list of AR tests by reading level that can be found in our Library Media Center.
