2007-2008 Anderson Elementary Second Grade Handbook
Anderson Elementary Second Grade

General Information

Before School Procedures

The cafeteria and gymnasium will be opened each morning at 7:30 a.m. for all students that arrive before the morning bell. Second graders will go to the gym. Teachers will pick them up and take them to their classes.

Starting the School Day

The school day is officially from 7:55 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.

Students will be considered tardy if they arrive after 7:55 a.m. and should report directly to the school office for a tardy slip before entering the classroom.

Communication

Second graders will have a binder with a communication folder inside. There will be a communication sheet for each six weeks. Please initial the sheet daily. This sheet will serve as an important communication tool throughout the year.

Report Cards/Conferences/Testing

Your child’s teacher will contact you before the end of the first 12 weeks for a parent/teacher conference. Please contact your child’s teacher if you need to discuss progress before or after this scheduled time. Report cards will go home every six weeks.

Second graders are given the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) three times per year, and the district’s math assessment in the fall and spring. Results from these assessments will be sent home.

We encourage you to communicate regularly with your child’s teacher. A voicemail can be left or you are welcome to e-mail.

Field Trips:

We will take two field trips during the school year. Before choosing a trip, we carefully consider the educational value, distance from school, and cost. In order to make field trips a safe learning experience for all students, we ask that chaperones note the following information:
• Siblings may not attend field trips.
• If you need to cancel, please let your child’s teacher know ASAP.
• Please do not purchase souvenirs or food for your child or children in your group.

Snacks:
Children may bring a small, dry snack each day to be eaten during the classroom snack time. We STRONGLY urge families to send nutritional snacks. (no candy, cookies, etc.)

Students may bring water bottles with secure, squirt-top lids. They should be cleaned and washed out daily for health reasons. Sports drinks, juice boxes, or soft drinks are NOT allowed.

Homework assignments will be sent home on Mondays and are due on Fridays. Assignments are given to provide additional practice or to extend learning that has occurred in the classroom.

Red Hot Reading Logs

Your child will be expected to complete a reading log each six weeks. Student goals are set by each student with the help of a family member. Parents are asked to initial each section on the Red Hot Reading Log form. Goals will vary. Your child may use minutes, hours, chapters, or books as goals.

We will host a Red Hot Reading Log Celebration at the end of each six week period to honor those students who achieved their goal.

Recess
Second graders enjoy a daily recess from 10:40 – 11:00. During inclement weather, we stay indoors. If your child needs to refrain from playing due to injury or illness, please send a note.

After School Procedures

Second graders will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m. Please refrain from picking up your child from the classroom as this only adds to the congestion.

Dismissal is organized as follows:
• Car riders are picked up the south side door (K-2 and older siblings).
• Bus riders will line up by bus color and will be dismissed through the main front entrance.
• Daycare riders will be escorted to the cafeteria and sit in their designated daycare group. They will be dismissed through the outside cafeteria door.
• Walkers will be escorted to the back double doors that face the playground area.

If your child will be going home in a different way, PLEASE notify your child’s teacher in writing and remind your child of the change. If there is a last minute change, please call the office and they will notify your child’s teacher.

HAVE A GREAT YEAR!
