| Breakfast...A Great Start to Learning! |
| Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Here are a few suggestions to help your child get the most out of his breakfast. 1) Your child should drink 8 ounces of water in the morning before they come to school. If your child goes to bed at 8:30, he has gone about 11 hours without hydration. Dehydration has begun. The first to go...memory and thinking skills...not a great way to start your school day! 2) Some of the healthiest breakfast will include a protien, complex carbs. Peanut butter, sausage, bacon, or nuts provide a great source of protein. Complex carbs are whole wheat products, oatmeal, english muffins, and high fiber cereals. 3) Fruit is better than fruit juice if possible. A plum, apple, tangerine, strawberries, blueberries, banana, etc. are all easy to add to breakfast in yogurt, cereal or just by themselves. 4) Dairy, low fat milk, low fat yogurt (what out for the sugar in the flavored yogurt! is a great way to help get Vitamin D into your child's system. Things to avoid.... SUGAR!!!! Great source of temporary energy and then about 30-45 minutes later a big "mental crash". Avoid donuts, poptarts, sugar coated cereal, etc. Just because they like it doesn't mean it is good for them! On the run....grab an apple and cut it in half. Spread some peanut butter on it or pour half a cup of vanilla yogurt in a ziplock container, add some granola and some blueberries! It will really make a difference in your child's day! |
