| Welcome Back To Green’s Speech Program! Schedule Your child will be seen in accordance with the time designated at his or her last ARD meeting. I make every effort to schedule a time that will not interfere with presentation of information in the classroom (i.e. I try for center time, DEAR time, etc.) If this is not possible, the teacher and I will monitor the child’s progress in class and change the schedule if speech sessions are causing any difficulty in the classroom. Your child’s speech time will be noted on the inside of their speech notebook. I will begin seeing students Wednesday August 27th As was the case last year, students may not be seen for pull-out sessions during one week of the six weeks. During this time, I will be completing testing, holding parent meetings and observing in the classroom. This scheduled time means that I do not have to sporadically cancel your child’s session. It also allows me the time to make up sessions your child may have missed due to school events and observe him or her in the classroom to measure the effectiveness of therapy! Homework and Practice Students will be given a spiral notebook for speech. We will do classwork in this notebook and information about the specific skills we are working on will be found here as well. Instructions for home work, play ideas and home support can be found on my school website. I ask that you check the notebook every speec day (your child's schedule can be found on the inside front cover) and sign under that day’s date. This assures me that your child is sharing his thinking about his goals outside my room and practicing some of the home activities. Speech and language, like all new skills, are learned best when they are incorporated into everyday life. To this end, please try to keep your child’s goals in mind as you go about your day. If your child is working on a particular sound, listen for and repeat words with this sound while reading books, watching TV and listening to the radio. If your child is working on describing events and things, be more descriptive as you talk about your day at work or things you have seen. I only get to see them for a limited time each week, so the more parents and teachers incorporate goals, the faster the kids will progress! More specific information for individual goals can be found on the website. ARDs, Testing and Dismissal Because speech falls under the Special Education umbrella, we are required to hold an ARD (Admission, Review and Dismissal) meeting every year that the child is in services. At this meeting, we discuss goals and scheduling. Testing to determine developmental levels and progress is required every three years. A child can be dismissed from speech for several reasons including mastery of all goals, no more evidence of a delay, continued lack of progress or parental decision. Contact Information I do not have a set conference time. If I am unavailable when you call or e-mail, I will get back to you with 48 hours. This year I am at Allen High School all day Thursday, so I will not be available at Green on that day. Thank you for your support as we work together to make this school year a success!
