Stages of Development


Birth to Age 1-1/2 years...
Needs parents or caregivers who are affectionate, consistent, predictable, and help children trust and bond with family and friends.

Ages 1-1/2 to 3 years...
Needs experiences in caring for themselves, e.g., feeding themselves, toilet behaviors, dressing; Needs parents who give children choices within limitations.

3 to 5 years...
Needs experience in setting goals, carrying out projects, taking leadership; Needs parents who let children participate in family work activities; Needs teachers who give children projects that they can complete to gain a sense of achievement; Needs parent, counselors, and teachers who correct children with logical consequences; Sibling rivalry is freqent and children may feel guilty about contemplated aggressiveness.

6 to 11 years...

Needs experiences in building, creating, and accomplishing to gain a feeling of adequacy; Needs encouragement and deserved praise to achieve competence; Needs academic, physical, social, and work skills for healthy self esteem; Needs teachers, parents, and counselors who are nurturing to help children discover and develop special talents and abilities.

12 to 18 years...
Needs experiences in developing ego identity, including moral, social, and vocational identity; Needs parents, teachers, and counselors who appreciate the adolescent as a unique and worthwhile individual; Needs parents who recognize the adolescent's learning style and are suportive of the child.
