Norton Elementary teachers involved in the schools environmental education (SEED) Team and Ecoliteracy Project have worked with Mark Baldwin the last two years to create lessons for students, learn naturalistic journaling skills, develop science observations and inquiry techniques, and establish a series of "sense of place" maps. From the RTPI website: RTPI’s Education Mission The Roger Tory Peterson Institute recognizes that teachers have unique opportunities to help young people develop a relationship with nature. Roger Tory Peterson himself credited his seventh grade science teacher, Blanche Hornbeck, with sparking his curiosity about nature and starting him on the path to becoming the most celebrated naturalist of the 20th century. Remembering the wonderful, positive influence Miss Hornbeck had on his life, Roger Tory Peterson told RTPI’s founders, “We will teach the teachers.” We have been doing that ever since. Over the years RTPI’s teacher professional development programs have evolved. But the basic principles - to provide educators with the knowledge, skills, tools, and confidence to infuse nature study into their teaching - have remained the same. RTPI provides professional development to teachers through an assortment of workshops, courses, and institutes, both face-to-face and on-line, along with publications and special projects. And we’re always searching for innovative ways to carry out our mission through partnerships with schools and other like-minded organizations.
