Welcome to Kindergarten

THE ABC'S OF KINDERGARTEN
Absence from school
If your child is sick and misses school, Texas State Law requires a written note within 5 days after the child returns to school.
Backpacks
Students need a backpack to bring home their school work.
Birthdays
We want every child to enjoy this special day. Students may bring plain popcorn, muffins (no icing), boxed juices with straws and paper goods if they want to celebrate with their friends at school. This is due to a change in state law regarding healthy eating. Summer birthdays will be given a special day in May.
Invitations to birthday parties may not be delivered at school.
Centers
Learning centers have materials for free exploration as well as teacher planned activities.
Communication
Boyd Kindergarten Newsletters will be sent home periodically keep parents informed about what we are studying at school.
Discipline
Boyd Elementary uses a school wide discipline plan from grades K-6. Our programs include No Bullying, Vision Management and Character Counts. Students, Parents and Teachers sign the Vision Management Goals.
Environment
Our classroom environment reflects real, relevant teaching and learning.
Field Trips
Parents will be notified prior to any field trips. Only parents who have been cleared with a Criminal Record Release Form through Allen ISD may volunteer.
First Day of School
The first day of school can seem quite overwhelming.
Morning students report to the cafeteria until the first bell rings. It is important to be positive. Discuss your child's concerns. Children sometimes worry about using the bathroom at school. Please make sure your child has on clothing that is easy to button, snap, zip, etc. Extra clothing can be carried in their backpack.
Class schedule 7:55 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.
Good Job
Kindergartners are rewarded with praise, stickers and rewards for good manners and academic achievement in the classroom.
Handwriting
Students learn how to write in block style manuscript on three lines. Names begin with a capital letter and end in lowercase letters.
Homework
Kindergarten does not have a designated homework schedule. Please work with your child on concepts we are studying in class.
Importance
It is important to keep all records current. If you move, get a new telephone number, change jobs or babysitters please inform the school office immediately.
Independence
This is the age at which your child becomes more independent. With this independence, children learn that they can do what they set out to do and that they are responsible for the choices they make. Therefore, expect your child to succeed, provide challenges and allow them to make choices.
Join
Please join Boyd PTA. Parent participation is valued at our school.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
A parent/teacher conference is held during the first 12 weeks of school. Notification of conference time will be sent home in writing.
Quiet Time
Students will need to be quiet and respectful so that other students can learn.
Read at Home Program
The Read at Home Program to earn a banana split begins at the end of January. It is never too early to begin reading to your child. It is important to read to your child and let him/her read to you. Set aside ten or fifteen minutes every day to read. Make this a fun time of the day for you and your child. Read a variety of literature- narrative, informative and poetry. After reading, ask your child questions about the story. This will help your child's thinking skills.
Show and Tell
Look for designated Show and Tell Days on the Kindergarten Newsletter.
Snacks
Students may bring a healthy snack in a labeled baggie with a labeled water bottle daily. Snack time will be after recess. Due to a change in state law regarding healthy eating, we encourage you to send fruit (cut-up), cheese, crackers and water. Some teachers prefer to have each child bring a box of crackers to share with their friends.
Sugary items will not be distributed in the classroom.
Star of the Week
It is important for Kindergarten children to know they are special. Each child will be given a week to be featured as the "Super Star" of our class. The children will enjoy this activity.
Transportation
At the beginning of the school year, we will ask for dismissal plans. For the protection of the children, the teacher must be notified in writing if there is a change in the way your child will be going home. If we do not receive written notification, your child will be sent home in the regular manner. Students who are going home or with babysitters will be dismissed on the Bethany side of the building. Day care centers pick up students on the Jupiter side.
Tuesday Folder
Every Tuesday your child will bring home a folder filled with school information. Be sure to sign the folder and return it on Wednesday.
Understanding
Your child is important to us. We will always treat your child with lots of love, respect and understanding.
Volunteers
Parents who have completed a Criminal Release Form may volunteer. Every classroom will have a Room Mother. Contact the Boyd PTA if you are interested in volunteering.
