Tidbits #4
Tidbits from Mrs. Ryan

Math – The second 6-weeks is filled with objectives that can be reinforced at home. We are covering money, time, and temperature. We are also approaching multiplication.

Any home practice is appreciated.

Lay out different combinations of coins and let your child add up the totals. Can your child identify every coin and write it? (i.e. a quarter is written as .25, a penny as .01)

Ask your child what time it is at different intervals. Use terms such as “a quarter ‘til (or to)” or “half past” or “before/after.” Do you have an analog clock in your house? Questions such as, “What is a time between 3:15 and 3:45?” will be asked in word problems.

With thermometers, the most difficult thing is to know the increments. Is the thermometer counting by ones, twos, or fives? Do you have a thermometer at home?

*Some children are already into a habit of practicing facts daily at home. It shows in their computation and in their confidence in solving problems. If your child is weak with basic facts, they should have flash cards at home and practice 5-10 minutes daily. Make a game out of it! If your child can add and subtract with great fluency (fast)…go on and begin studying the multiplication facts through the twelves.

Reading – I am thrilled that so many students are reading nightly. You have no idea what a difference this makes. One student told me the other day, “My mom makes me read every night.” I responded, “You are lucky to have such a wise and loving parent.” This time should be relaxing, fun, full of conversation and done with independent-level reading books. If you want to read with your child, but don’t know how to go about it, let me know.

Spirals: due once a week on designated day
Independent Reading Sheets: can be turned in anytime…this is your child’s PROOF of reading for pleasure.

• Did you know that Caden brought his dad to class? Ask your child about this visit. Do you have a fire safety plan?
• WE had a number of winners in the PTA Reflections Program. Billye, Kenzie, and Tyrese took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Intermediate Visual Arts division! Honorable Mention awards went to: Carla, Nikki, Danielle, and Taylor.
• All conferences have been scheduled. I look forward to talking with everyone.
• In Social Studies, we are reading a good book about a boy from Vietnam called, The Land I Lost. WE made non las this week. The students love learning about other cultures.
• We had our first Art-To-Go lesson with Mrs. Barnes.
• In about a week, I will be asking each child to bring in an address of a relative or friend whom they wish to write. We will mail the letters from school. We are also going to write our Rountree pen-pals soon!
