| Career and Technology
(Business Education) |
| The overall purpose of business and marketing education is to
prepare students for further instruction in higher education and
to provide knowledge and skills applicable to current and future
business climates.
|
| Communication (Journalism
& Broadcast) |
Communication between individuals and groups of people is vital
to success. The communicative process of perceiving, listening,
thinking and speaking deserves special attention. Speech, Journalism
and Broadcast classes develop strength in verbal, written and visual
communications.
|
| Language Arts |
A culture’s written history is the legacy that it leaves
for those who follow. The study of literature allows students to
explore people, cultures and values in the context of the past and
the present.
Through literature, AISD Language Arts curriculum develops critical
thinking skills, writing and speaking skills, thus ensuring the
legacy of language for the future.
|
| Languages Other
Than English |
| Communication between individuals and groups is
essential in a global community. Knowledge of a foreign language
promotes and enhances business and economic opportunities while
fostering interpersonal communication, understanding and appreciation
of cultures. Most importantly, study of a foreign language contributes
diversity and strength to an academic foundation.
|
| Mathmatics |
Mathematics education for the twenty-first century
aims to develop the knowledge and skills that will be needed for
daily and professional life. With knowledge and skills as a foundation,
mathematics experience teaches students to value mathematics, to
gain confidence in their own mathematical ability, to become mathematical
problem solvers and to communicate and reason mathematically. Through
activities that encourage use and knowledge of math, students are
able to internalize the logical structure and meaning of mathematics
in the modern world.

| Performing
Arts |
Performing in a music/dance organization in AISD
provides the opportunity for students to engage in learning on social,
intellectual and aesthetic levels. Band, orchestra, choir and dance
provide close interaction with peers working toward a common goal.
Students form a community within the larger community of high school
or middle school, developing leadership skills, self esteem and
communication skills.
Performing in ensembles contributes to intellectual development
as students learn to read music, sing, dance or play an instrument.
Learning music/dance develops both sides of the brain through the
connection of cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), affective
(attitudes and feelings) and kinesthetic (the senses) experiences.
Music/Dance provides a unique melding of these experiences. In the
same way, performing music/dance provides the means for emotional
development through self-expression and creativity. Most importantly,
music/dance instills in each student an appreciation of and connection
to the richness and beauty of life.

| PE &
Health |
Physical education provides movement knowledge and
skills that establish the foundation for enjoyment, social development
and a physically active lifestyle. Through physical education, students
will be motivated to strive for lifetime personal fitness and recognize
the health-related benefits.
|
| Science |
Critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques
are extremely important in the world today. Students possessing
these abilities are able to adapt to the changing world around them
and experience success in any chosen career pathway. Science courses
prepare those who wish to pursue a career in a science field, but
also equip all students with the tools necessary to formulate and
present informed, explicit solutions when faced with academic, business
or life challenges.
|
| Social
Studies |
Social Studies develop student interests in local,
state, national and international affairs. Students will understand
how a free society’s actions impact its present and future.
This knowledge will help students to understand the price of freedom
and justice.
Social Studies also provides an opportunity for research and analysis
on controversial issues, testing of evidence, logical thinking and
effective presentation of argument. Students are given the opportunity
to study several disciplines including Psychology, Sociology and
Film as a Reflection of Society, and Theory of Knowledge.

| Technology
Applications |
Technology is no longer a subject, but a way of life.
Allen ISD continues to integrate technology in all core areas of
the K-12 curriculum to help students become successful in a global
community. AISD views technology as a tool to create real-world
environments, a means to expose students to a universe of ideas
and a preparation for the future in a constantly changing world.
Access to global information will become the primary resource for
every course. We offer these courses to give an enriched understanding
of computer technology beyond the basics.
To support this mission, AISD provides powerful technology tools
for students and teachers.
Using network and multimedia technologies, students in all grades
have almost unlimited resources for exploring and learning about
their world.

| Visual
Arts |
The study of art is both an aesthetic and academic
education. Aesthetically, it is the education of human feeling through
the development of responsiveness to the qualities of visual arts.
Academically, visual arts involve learning in the major domains:
cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), affective (attitudes
and feelings) and kinesthetic (the senses). Visual Arts students
engage in a comprehensive learning process through the interrelation
of these domains.
Visual Arts also provides an important means for developing self-expression
and creativity.
When students fully experience works of art, the richness and beauty
of life become more meaningful.
