2011-2012 PTA Programs
In August, we had a popsicle social during Meet the Teacher Night. It was fun seeing so many returning Vaughan families meeting new families and their teachers as well as favorite staff members.
In September, following our first PTA meeting of the year, we partnered with Vaughan teachers to provide a “Curriculum Cruise.” Parents were encouraged to visit their children’s classrooms to learn about curriculum plans for the year.
This year’s Red Ribbon Family Picnic in October was a huge success despite the cold, rainy weather! Families enjoyed hot dogs grilled by staff, chips, drinks, and dessert. The Book Fair was a big attraction, as were the bouncehouses. Visits from several of the Allen Americans hockey players was a big hit! This month, Vaughan also kicked off Rachel's Challenge to show our commitment against bullying.
For our 12th annual Veteran’s Day celebration in November, we honored service men and women from Vaughan families. The morning celebration was very well-attended and highly inspiring. This month, we also presented Language Arts & Social Studies Night. Vaughan teachers were on hand to provide parents with information on the curriculum as well as how to help their children succeed in these areas. During the parent sessions, students and siblings attended an interactive visit from author Sherry Garland who spoke about the process of writing and publishing a book. Students then created theri own bookmarks.
In January, we hosted our annual Family Game Night. This year, each 5th grade class selected 2 students to compete against Vaughan staff in Minute-to-Win-It type games. It was the first time we tried this type of game and it proved to be an evening of highly entertaining and competitive fun!
In February, we welcomed Sgt. Chris Meehan from the Collin County Sheriff's Dept., Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. His presentation on internet safety was extremely informative.
The Spring Open House in March was a smashing success! The Book Fair was again a popular attraction and families enjoyed visiting the classrooms to see their students’ wonderful accomplishments.
Following April's PTA meeting, our wonderful First Graders presented a musical performance. Students then enjoyed creating a piggy bank with recycled milk jugs in honor of Earth Day. April also saw the kick-off of our Hiking for Vikings fundraiser to raise money needed to add a shade structure to the school.
In May, we had an enormous turn-out at the End-of-Year Bash! Everyone's an All-Star at Vaughan and that was reflected in our sports-themed party. Families enjoyed games, prizes, popcorn, nachos, snow cones, drinks, keepsake photos, and the hugely popular dunking booth manned by our wonderful WatchDOGS! It was a great way to celebrate the end of a successful school year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the many events sponsored by the Vaughan PTA! We look forward to making the 2012-2013 school year just as much fun for our families!
