How does the midpoint raise system work and what is the rationale for the system?
The midpoint system is
intended to provide equitable pay for employees in the same pay grade.
The system groups similar job responsibilities on the same pay grade.
The system assumes that those on the same pay grade perform similar
duties and have similar value to the organization. Every person on the
same pay grade receives an equal amount of a pay raise. For
instance, if the midpoint is $40,000. and a
3% pay
is given, the amount of raise for the pay grade would be $1,200. The
emphasis of this system is on the amount of pay increase, not the
percentage of pay increase. This method is in contrast with the “across
the board” pay increase system which focuses on the percentage of pay
increases and provides different amounts for pay increases. This system
continues to spread the distance between those at the bottom of the pay
grade and those at the top. Over time, it creates an unequal system.
