| The Texas
Reading Initiative challenges Texas educators to focus
on the most basic of education goals--teaching children to
read. The unequivocal goal President George Bush (then
Governor) set for the state was that all students should be able
to read on grade level or higher by the end of the third grade and
continue to read on grade level or higher throughout their
schooling. In announcing his initiative, President Bush
clearly recognized that achieving his goal would not be simple,
and that the state would have to provide tools and support to
school districts as they strive to meet the challenge.
The Academics 2000 Grant Initiative
has provided Allen ISD with the means to meet that
challenge. The Grant focuses on developing components of a
sound reading curriculum, researched-based literacy resources,
individual assessments, proper staff development, and parent
participation. |
