Getting Started | Program Priorities

Teaching our children to read on grade level by third grade and maintain success in this area is the challenge of each Texas educator. How do we prepare teachers to deliver instruction that meets the needs of an ever-changing population of school children?  Allen ISD and Laredo ISD have met the challenge through the use of Academics 2000 funds.  This grant initiative which utilizes distance learning resources has made it possible for two diverse Texas districts to work together and develop a unique reading model.

It has been said that teaching reading is rocket science.  The process of learning to read involves sophisticated skills and applications. The Start Small…Think Big reading project is based on five key components of reading instruction: phonology, word study, comprehension, fluency and writing.  The program focuses on exploring research-based strategies in each of these areas. The multi-sensory strategies introduced are intended to supplement the teacher’s instructional methodologies.  Using this model, the teacher becomes an expert and uses this knowledge to meet the individual needs of each learner. 

 

Getting Started

We have created this web site to share the successes and challenges of implementing an Academics 2000 Reading Grant.  This specific project focuses on the implementation of the Grant within Allen Independent School District.

The web site has been divided into "need" sections.  While trying to create a site that meets the needs of all expected visitors, this web can be traveled through three different paths.  All three paths include some basic components such as the About Us, Contact Us, and Home buttons located at the top, right of this page.  If at anytime you wish to return to the this page, just click the Texas Logo (top left).
  • Path one allows the visitor to study the Grant web as lead through the Grant's program priorities.
  • Path two allows the visitor to speed toward specific topics as he/she needs them by clicking the folder tabs above.
  • Path three is for that visitor seeking very specific information within this web via the site search engine.

Program Priorities

A vital component to the Academics 2000 Reading Grant is the collaborative partnership with a large Texas, economically disadvantaged school district.  The partnership combines the best knowledge about reading development from both school districts to create a viable and replicable model for other school districts to utilize as an example.  Laredo ISD provides invaluable information and assistance to the Grant and every component of the Reading Grant is shared with Laredo ISD through a rigorous reading staff development program.
