The
goal that George Bush set for the state was that all students
required that all students should be able to read on grade level
or higher by the end of the third grade and continue to read on
grade level or higher throughout their schooling. The mandate
requires that each district must establish a system for
reporting results of a reading instrument to the commissioner of
education. This means that K-2 students are assessed twice each
year and that student scores are used to make informed and
appropriate decisions regarding reading instruction.
Both Allen and Laredo ISD currently have a formal
procedure in place to assess the ongoing reading level of
students. The
Academics 2000 initiative has allowed the districts to:
ü
Develop
forms to compile assessment data used to evaluate student
progress and determine specific instructional needs for every
child
ü
Recommend
methods for determining performance baselines of achievement for
individuals
ü
Develop
an electronic student profile to record student progress, test
results and explicit interventions.
Train teachers to use this software program.
ü
Communicate
student progress and accomplishments to parents on a regular
basis.
