Texas Reading Initiative

Priority Six:

Encourage and educate parents to promote their child's literacy development.

Tutor-Volunteer Model

By giving parents a variety of options to assist in the reading development, parents become better informed, thus providing more literacy opportunities for their children.  The more opportunities a child has to interact with print, the easier the acquisition of reading, writing and spelling. Well designed tutorials and well-trained volunteers have been able to make statistically significant increases on reading achievement.  During the 1999-2000 school year, volunteer training was expanded in Allen and Laredo ISD to include the methodologies of the recommended reading readiness program.  This year the program has been expanded to a tutoring system for all at-risk K-1st grade readers.
