The Board of Trustees appoints the Superintendent of Schools as the chief administrator and executive officer. With the assistance of his staff, the Superintendent directs the total educational and administrative programs in accordance with Board policies and the rules of the Texas Education Agency. The Superintendent attends all Board meetings and brings recommendations to the Board for action in carrying out the school district business.
Dr. Ken Helvey was named Superintendent of Schools for the Allen Independent School District in August of 2006. He previously served as Allen ISD's assistant superintendent for student services from 2001 until his appointment in 2006.
With more than 27 years of experience in public education, Dr. Helvey began his career as a vocational agriculture teacher in the Anna Independent School District. He was also a teacher and a coach at Celina, Denison and S & S Consolidated ISDs. He held the post of athletic director and head football coach at S & S from 1992 through 1995 before being named assistant principal at Graham Junior High School and then Graham High School. Later, he was appointed director of finance and technology at Graham ISD, and then accepted a position as assistant superintendent in Nacogdoches ISD before his arrival in Allen.
Originally from Howe, Texas, Dr. Helvey earned his undergraduate degree from Tarleton State University and his master’s degree in educational administration from Texas A & M Commerce. He received his doctoral degree from the University of North Texas.
He currently serves as chairman of the UIL Region 25 Music Executive Committee. He is an active member of Region 10's Regional Consortium for Innovation, North Texas Regional Consortium and TASA/TACS Study Group, Adjunct Professor for the University of North Texas, Collin County Family Promise Board as well as Allen Sunrise Rotary and the Texas Schools Coalition.
Dr. Helvey and his wife, Sheena, have been married for 25 years, and are the proud parents of four daughters and one granddaughter.
