The
Allen ISD Safe and Drug Free Schools Program is designed
to facilitate success for all students through
prevention and intervention strategies. Funded by the US
Department of Education under Title IV, Safe & Drug Free
Schools, and the school district, the program provides
counseling opportunities regarding violence and
substance use for students and their families through
the office of our
support counselor, Jennifer Atencio, Licensed
Professional Counselor and Certified Prevention
Specialist
and her staff of
counseling interns.
Our aim is to help students who need to be connected
with services available in our school district and in
the community. Confidentiality is essential in providing
the individual with an environment in which it is safe
to explore feelings and make decisions. Legal and
ethical standards of confidentiality require the SDFS
counseling staff to report appropriately or refer cases
of abuse, certain infractions of the Code of Conduct or
criminal activity, and students who are a danger to self
or others. The SDFS Counselor operates under the Texas
Family Code 32.004 which allows them to counsel students
dealing with these issues listed below without parental
consent:
(1) suicide prevention;
(2) chemical addiction or dependency; or
(3) sexual, physical, or emotional abuse
The Safe and Drug Free School Counselor also coordinates
with the AISD counseling staff to provide violence and
drug prevention curriculum and training for both
students and staff, parent forums with emphases on
topics such as Drug Proofing Your Kids and CyberSafety,
and work with various school personnel in crisis
situations including providing Critical Incident Stress
Debriefing when needed. Student weeks such as Red
Ribbon, Safe Driving, Buzz Free Prom and Sobriety during
Graduation are also coordinated through Safe and Drug
Free Schools.

Partnership Produces DVD on Teen
Alcohol Awareness
The Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers (Texas PTA)
and the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas have
formed a partnership to produce "Party 101:
Consequences," a new teen alcohol awareness DVD.
The goal of the partnership is to save lives by
educating teens, their families, and their educators
about the negative consequences of underage drinking.
The partnership also offers a workshop on the dangers of
teen drinking that is available to any interested group.
The partnerships intends to reach every teen, parent,
and educator in the state with the message via a
three-fold distribution method: scheduling of workshops,
free copies of the DVD available to anyone who prefers
to view the documentary at home with their families, and
broadcasts of the documentary in every media market in
Texas.
To order this free teen alcohol awareness DVD or
schedule a free workshop, visit the
Texas PTA Web site
at (then click on the "Party 101: Consequences" icon on
the left side of the page).
Questions about this initiative of the Texas PTA may be

Peer Mediation Camp
This
camp is designed to train fifth grade students
(incoming sixth graders) on the Peacemakers Peer
Mediation method. Six elementary campuses
currently participate in this program by selecting 6 students, based on
the recommendation of teachers
and principals, to be trained as peer mediators for the
following year. Assisting in the selection of students
and training are the Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALs)
students from Allen High School. These PAL
students are already trained and
experienced in Peer Mediation. They provide scenarios
or simulations of actual peer mediations sessions during
training. |
