Allen ISD welcomed 16,500
students back to school on August 7. Overall,
enrollments grew by 734 students in one year compared to
an increase of 975 students two years ago. The smaller
increase is due to the transfer of
approximately 500
students back to Lovejoy ISD. A transition plan approved
in 2003 gradually moves all Lucas and Fairview students
from Allen to Lovejoy middle and high school. The
opening of Chandler Elementary helped relieve Bolin Elementary’s enrollments this year. The next elementary
campus will open in northwest Allen in August 2008. The
complete enrollment report is available online.
Despite current trends,
the housing boom in Allen and Allen ISD will eventually
slow down as space for new homes dwindles. Demographic
studies show Allen reaching this “buildout” phase near
the year 2015. Looking ahead to that time, school
officials are working closely with city planners to
accurately project population growth and school facility
needs.
A demographic study conducted by Population and Survey
Analysts in 2004 and updated in 2005 showed school
enrollments at buildout ranging from 20,500 to 24,000
students. Rising birth rates in Allen will lead to
continued school enrollment growth after buildout but
not at the current pace.
New Schools Planned To Meet Growth
The opening of Chandler Elementary School in southeast
Allen has relieved high enrollments at Bolin Elementary
School. New elementary schools are also planned for west
Allen in 2008, northeast Allen in 2009, and north of
Highway 121 in 2010 to accommodate growth. One more
elementary school will likely be needed before buildout
but a decision on that school’s location will not be
made for several years.
Expansion of the Lowery Freshman Center into the current
Allen ISD Administration Building and the addition of
one more academic house to Allen High School will meet
secondary growth needs. A new Administration Building
will open adjacent to the Dillard Center on Bethany Road
in 2008.
