The community is invited to attend a formal dedication
ceremony for Chandler Elementary School on Sunday,
September 10 at 2 p.m.
The
school is named for Mrs. Carlena
Chandler, a retired Allen High School business teacher
and former AHS graduate. Chandler is the thirteenth
elementary school in AISD. Principal Cindy Blair
welcomed over 500 students for the first day of school
on August 7. A reception will follow the dedication in
the Chandler Cafeteria. The campus is located at 1000
Water Oak Drive in southeast Allen.
Born in McKinney, Texas
on April 2, 1942, Carlena Marion attended Allen High
School where she graduated as class valedictorian in
1960. Following high school she attended the University
of North Texas where she earned an undergraduate degree
in business administration and a graduate degree in
education. She married Charles Chandler in 1963 and the
couple raised two sons; Brian and Bart.
Chandler joined the
Allen High School faculty as a business teacher in 1968.
She taught business education at the school from 1968 to
1970 and returned in 1973. She retired in 1999 after
serving Allen High School over her entire teaching
career of twenty-eight years. Following her retirement,
Carlena Chandler continues to serve the Allen schools
through her volunteer work, substitute teaching
assignments and work with the Allen Retired Educator
Association.
Carlena Chandler has
touched the lives of thousands of students over two
generations in Allen. Chandler’s forty-seven year
association with the Allen schools has left an indelible
mark in our community and we are proud to recognize her
and all teachers by naming this new school in her honor.
