Allen
ISD has been rated as a Recognized School District by
the Texas Education Agency based upon results from the
Spring 2006 TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and
Skills).
Allen students showed significant improvements “across
the board” on the 2006 TAKS test according to results
officially released by the TEA on August 1. As a result,
the school district rating improved from Acceptable to
Recognized. Eight campuses are now rated Exemplary for
2006 compared to two campuses in 2005. Seven more
campuses earned Recognized ratings and two earned an
Acceptable rating.

A total of 97% of all Allen ISD students passed the
reading portion of the exam, which was administered in
April. The passing rate was 91% for mathematics, 98% for
writing, 97% for social studies and 89% for science.
Last year’s total scores were: 95% for reading; 90% for
mathematics, 98% for writing, 96% for social studies and
84% for science.
Another important measurement is the number of students
scoring at the higher commended performance level.
Commended numbers increased in all subject areas from
35% - 43% in reading; 30% - 36% in math; 43% - 44% in
writing; 7% - 12% in science; and 38% - 48% in social
studies.
Allen ISD’s most challenging area in 2005 was science.
New strategies and teacher training helped improve fifth
grade science scores 10 percentage points to 94%. Tenth
grade scores increased by 7% for a total of 83% passing
and eleventh grade scores dropped slightly from 93% -
91%.
Texas school districts and campuses receive exemplary,
recognized, acceptable or unacceptable ratings based on
overall scores and scores from three separate categories
including African American, Hispanic and Economically
Disadvantaged. The high school dropout rate is also
calculated into the ratings. There are 26 different
measurements for a school district or campus rating.
This year Allen ISD improved in 19 categories, stayed
the same in 5 categories and dropped one percentage
point in 1 category.
The results are outstanding, according to Dr. Brad
Lancaster, assistant superintendent for Learner
Services, especially when you consider the higher state
standards and the size of our campuses. “Our teachers
and students have met and then exceeded our
expectations. It’s difficult to appreciate how much
effort these scores represent.”
