The GT/AP Phoenix Program is a series of humanities-based English courses designed for identified gifted and talented students in grades 9-12. Curriculum is developed with an understanding of and appreciation for the intellectual, emotional, and social needs of gifted learners.
This four year program seeks to cultivate a love of language and strives to help students discover the power of the written and spoken word in their lives. Through an integration of literature, history, fine arts and currentevents, curriculum focuses on critical writing, reading and discussion, interpretive literary and rhetorical analysis, and development of personal writing style. Concentrating on World literature, Phoenix IV and III students undertake a two year study of ideas relevant to contemporary learners entitled "Exploring the Human Spirit." Ninth graders engage in a study of "The American Experience" while tenth graders delve into "The Hero's Journey."
GT/AP Phoenix is a designated Advanced Placement course, and Advanced English credit is awarded as per AISD's weighted GPA schedule. Students are encouraged to take both AP English exams (Language in the Junior year, Literature in the Senior year.)
