All children are born artists

    Dear Parents,

My name is Tracy Henderson and it is my privilege to be a part of your child’s visual art experience. I have been married for 32 years to my husband, Bill and we have a son and a daughter. Wags, the Bichon Frise, completes our family. This is my 10th year at Boyd and I am blessed to be able to work at such a great school!
Our art program is firmly rooted in the standards set by the Texas Education Agency.  TEKS for elementary art are organized into four strands:
Perception — developing abilities to organize ideas from the environment.
Creative expression/performance —developing the ability to express ideas in original works of art.
Historical/cultural heritage —developing understanding of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods and developing understanding of various cultures and historical periods from art.
Response/evaluation — making judgments about personal artworks and the works of others.

Art projects are evaluated with the following 4 areas taken into consideration:

    Expression – Does the Artist…

    understand the concept?

use resourcefulness and imagination in problem solving?

    Involvement – Is the Artist…

    pleased with the work?

showing growth in skills and applying previously-learned skills?

taking risks and pleasure in the creative process itself?

Personal Development – Is the Artist…

    following the directions?

open to comments and suggestions with regard to their artwork?
willing to share ideas and encourage other artists?

    Materials – Does the Artist…

                experiment with materials?

                exhibit coordination in using them?

                use materials appropriately?

                exhibit satisfactory craftsmanship?

Also, I will periodically, but informally (as they are working) ask questions about their project, such as:

    * Do you like it? Why or why not?
    * How is your craftsmanship?
    * What is the best part?
    * Have you viewed your work from various sides or from a distance?
    * What more could you do to increase the quality of your art piece?

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at tracy.henderson@allenisd.org . I check email at the beginning and end of the day and will do my best to answer in a timely manner. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of your child’s creative development!
