Texas Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes
The Texas Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes in Children (formerly the ANTES program) screens for Acanthosis Nigricans for 1st, 3rd and 5th. Acanthosis Nigricans, AN for short, is a skin condition that signals high insulin levels in the body.   This state mandated program helps assess children who may be at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes.  Children who are identified with the marker are also assessed for body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure.  Risk assessments are issued to the parents of these children, alerting parents of the child's risk factors and encouraging further evaluation from a health professional.
    Scolosis Pic
Fifth grade girls are screened for scoliosis in the fall. There are a few exceptions to the state mandated screening. Boys will be screened at age 13. A parent letter with more information will be sent home closer to the screening time.
    Growth and Development
This program, entitled "Always Changing", is presented to 5th grade students in the fall. It covers age appropriate material about puberty. More information will be sent to all parents of 5th graders before the presentation.
