    ABC’s Of Kindergarten!

     

    A

    Absences: A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parents and the school.  Your childs progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is a key.

    Arrival: Your child may be dropped off as early as 7:25 (to wait for their teacher in the cafeteria or to eat breakfast).  I will pick the class up at 7:35.  Students are considered absent or tardy after 7:50.   Please make sure your child arrives to school on time.

    B

    Birthdays: Birthdays are a special occasion for young children!  Please email me to discuss any food allergies we have in our room.  We are not permitted to allow students to pass out birthday invitations at school.  However, you may sign-up to add your name and email to the class email list which will be shared with all participating classroom parents. 

    C

    Conferences: We will have a fall conference to discuss your childs strengths and areas that need improvement.  If at any time you have concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me.  Your child's conference will be a student-led conference, so please bring your child! 

    D

    Discipline:  Our classroom is a small community where teamwork and good relationships are expected. We will spend time learning class procedures and practicing them. Each student is expected to act within our standards of behavior. To establish good order and help the children learn self-control, they will be guided to respect themselves and their companions through specific directions, positive reinforcement, suggested new activities, and responsible actions. Children are introduced to the procedures for daily classroom rules and routines from the first day of school.   As your childs teacher I am here to help your child reach his/her fullest potential. I will work with you and your child to help them be successful in any way I can.

    E-mail: This is an excellent way to communicate with me. I check my e-mail on a daily basis. My email is Michelle.Gallus@allenisd.org.

    F

    Folders:  Your child will have a folder that will be sent home daily containing homework, behavior calendar, and other pertinent information.  Please check this folder nightly, remove any necessary papers, and return it to school the following day. This is where I will look for your notes, signed reports, lunch money in a labeled envolope, etc. Your childs folder is his or her responsibility.

     Help at Home: Your child is expected to know these readiness skills:

     Full name     Address        Telephone number     Parents’ names          

    Identify eleven colors         Counting to 10

    Printing first name beginning with a capital letter and the rest in lowercase

     

    When time permits, work on these skills also:

     Reciting the alphabet                 Shape names                

    Birthday (month & date)              Identifying numbers to 10

    Identifying letter names              Tying shoes

    Your extra help at home really makes a difference!

    I

    Injury/Sickness at School: The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning.  It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill.  Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy. 

    Independent Reading: Because children learn to read by reading, they need plenty of opportunities to read independently.  Sufficient time and appropriate materials are necessary to develop and strengthen reading abilities.  By giving the children time to read both at school and at home, we can work together to provide a literature-rich environment and a life-long love of reading.

    Journals: One strategy that will be used to help convey the vital concept that print conveys meaning is the frequent use of journal writing.  In these journals the kindergartners combine their emerging writing skills with their drawing skills.  As the children are exposed to a variety of phonics and reading experiences, journal entries will move from drawings and inventive spellings towards more conventional writing.

    K

    Kindness: Students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Bothering others, bullying and interrupting learning will not be permitted.

    L

    Lunch: Children may bring a packed lunch from home or purchase a school lunch. The cost of a school lunch is $2.25. To help the children learn the cafeteria procedures, we ask that parents wait until October to begin lunch visits.  Thank you for your understanding.

    Money: When sending money to school with your child, please send it in a sealed envelope with the following information written on it:

    - Your child first and last name

    - Teacher’s name

    - The amount of money

    - Purpose of money

    N

    Names: Please be sure to write your childs name on all belongings brought to school: lunchboxes, backpacks, coats, change of clothes, etc.

    Nurse: We do have a registered nurse here at the school, but we make it a point to only make visits to the nurses station if absolutely necessary. If your child has any health issues please make her aware of these.

    Open Communication: It is so important for teachers and parents to have open communication to help children have a successful school year. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns you may have.

    P

    Parent Involvement:  Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school! We are always happy to have your help for special activities in the classroom. I will try to let you know at least a week ahead of time if I need help. Requests for help will be published in our weekly newsletter. I hope that you can come and join in the fun!

    Recess: We will have recess twice each day.  We will be on the playground as weather permits. Otherwise, we will have inside recess.  Please dress your child accordingly for outdoor weather, and send a coat/jacket when necessary.  Tennis shoes are suggested.

    Restroom: Have your child use the restroom shortly before coming to school. Your child needs to take care of all restroom needs independently, so please practice at home. 

    S

    Snack: We will have a quick snack break daily. Please make sure the snack is a healthy, peanut-free, dry snack (pretzels, cereal, crackers, fruit, cheese, vegetables).  Please do not send in gogurts, fruit in a cup with juice, applesauce or fruits which need to be peeled because these snacks tend to be messy.  Your child may bring a water (only) bottle preferably with a flip top to reduce spills.

    T

    Toys: Bringing toys to school is discouraged because they distract the children from learning. If a toy is accidentally lost or broken, feelings will be hurt. 

    U

    Unique: The special ages of four, five and six are a unique time of curiosity, energy beyond belief and rapid learning. It is a time when the child receives his or her first impression of school. At this age children soak up information like little sponges, and are being introduced to many new concepts and ideas. We use a lot of repetition and re-learning to ensure that these basic skills are absorbed and understood for lifelong learning.

     Understanding: I feel that part of being an effective teacher understands the needs of each individual child in my room. Part of understanding the needs of your child requires open communication between the parents and me.  If you have any questions or concerns please always feel free to contact me.

    V

     Volunteers: I encourage lots of parent involvement in the classroom.  I always appreciate and welcome any parents that would like to volunteer to help with academic activities (science lab for example), chaperone field trips, prepare materials, help plan parties, or help in any programs that occur during the school year.  All volunteers must complete a background check and volunteer application which can be found on the Allen ISD Human Resource website.  If you are unable to volunteer in the classroom you may participate by sending items needed, making things at home, and attending special activities and celebrations.  Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school.

    W

    Writing:  Our writing program builds on what each child already knows. Writing begins with scribbles and proceeds to lines and circles, random strings of letters, words and spaces and eventually sentences. Your children will be encouraged and praised for all attempts and accomplishments in writing. Providing a risk-free environment is paramount to your child's progress in writing.  If possible, please provide your child with writing tools, such as pencils, crayons, markers and paper at home.

    eXtra Special: Kindergartners learn that they are extra special and unique.  Kindergartners have opportunities to describe how they are alike as well as different from others. They share their culture and learn about different cultures within the class.

    eXtra Clothes: Please send an extra pair of clothes, and underwear with your child to leave in their backpack. Often times, we have various accidents (bathroom, sickness, playground, etc.) at school and if we have a set of clothes available, your child can be made to feel more comfortable quicker.  Please write your childs name on each item.

    YOUR Input: I want you as a parent to be satisfied and feel at ease with every aspect of your child’s education.     ZZZZZ’s: Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give to your child.   It will help them to be alert and ready to learn each day!
