Bad Weather Closing and Delayed Opening Information
Closings and Delays May Occur
Allen ISD campuses are occasionally closed because of bad weather such as snow and ice. Other circumstances such as power outages or other utility problems may also cause a single campus or the entire school district to close. Instead of closing, there are also times when campuses or the school district will delay the start of school for safety reasons. The following information should help parents understand what procedures Allen ISD uses to close or delay the start of school.
Notification Process For Closings and Delays
Under most circumstances, a decision to close or delay school due to bad weather is made by 5:30 a.m. If enough information is available, school district officials may make a decision the night before and parents will be notified before 10:00 p.m.
If school is closed or delayed, the announcement will first be posted on the Allen ISD website. Information also will be posted on the Allen ISD Facebook page and Twitter account. Parents will be notified by automated phone calls through the SchoolMessenger notification system. It is important that parents keep their contact phone number current in Skyward if they want to receive SchoolMessenger notifications.
The major television and radio stations will be notified. Because of the large number of school districts in the area, the television and radio announcements are sometimes delayed 30 to 45 minutes.
Please Don't Call Us - We'll Call You
Parents are encouraged not to call the school offices since no employees are answering the phones late at night or early in the morning. We also ask that parents do not call the notification system back as this also slows the system down. The notification system is not designed to receive calls back from parents.
The Allen ISD website and Facebook are the quickest sources of information for a school closing. If school is not closed for the day, no announcements will be made and students should report at the normal time. The school district does not send out a SchoolMessenger notification that school is in session although it may be posted as a reminder on Facebook.
In the unlikely event that schools would be dismissed early due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, parents would be notified through SchoolMessenger.
Delayed Start of School Information
If the start of school is delayed due to weather or other circumstances, school will begin one or two hours later. Students in grades 7 to 12 should be aware that changes in that day's class schedule will likely occur. They should check the campus website for additional information.
