The Extended Essay, or EE, is an in-depth study of a focused topic chosen by the IB student when he or she is in 11th grade. The student normally writes his EE in one of his six chosen IB subjects, or a subject that he has a background in. The EE is intended to promote academic research and writing skills, and provides students with an opportunity to engage in personal research in a topic of their own choice.
The EE is written under the guidance of our EE Coordinator, Karen Hunnicutt, and an EE supervisor specific to the student's chosen subject. (Example: if the student writes his EE in a math-related topic, his supervisor would be a math teacher.)
Students spend the bulk of their 11th grade year conducting research for their EE, and producing a 4,000-word piece of formally presented, structured writing in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned and coherent manner appropriate to the subject chosen. The student meets with his supervisor multiple times during the research and writing process, and receives guidance according to IB regulations. The EE is formally submitted to the IB during the student's senior year.
