Vision and Hearing
These screenings are done throughout the year for new students and all students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, and 5th grade. I am always happy to do a vision and/or hearing screen on any student at the request of a parent or teacher. I typically begin screening 3rd and 5th grade students within the first month of school. Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be screened in September. I love having parent volunteers for this, so let me know if you are interested!
Texas Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes
The Texas Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes in Children (formerly the ANTES program) screens for Acanthosis Nigricans for 1st grade, 3rd grade, and 5th grade students. Acanthosis Nigricans, AN for short, is a skin condition that signals high insulin levels in the body. This state mandated program helps assess children who may be at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes. Children who are identified with the marker are also assessed for body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure. Risk assessments are issued to the parents of these children, alerting parents of the child's risk factors and encouraging further evaluation from a health professional.
Fifth Grade students are screened for scoliosis in the spring. A parent letter with more information will be sent home closer to the screening time.
Growth and Development
This program, entitled "Always Changing", is presented to 5th grade students in the fall. It covers age appropriate material about puberty. More information, along with a permission exclision form, will be sent to all parents of 5th graders closer to the program time. You may preview the video @ https://www.pgschoolprograms.com/Parents . We will only show the students the gender specific video. We will NOT show the co-ed video.
