Frequently Asked Questions for the 2022-2023 Calendar

Did the length of the school year change from the 2021-2022 school year?
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires districts to provide a specific number of operational minutes in the academic school calendar, rather than a specific number of school days. The 2022-2023 academic calendar meets this requirement. The 2022-2023 academic calendar reflects 174 days of instruction; the 2021-2022 school year had 175 days of instruction.

Why does the academic calendar include a Fall Break scheduled for October 17-21?
In most recent years, Allen ISD’s academic calendar has provided multiple student holidays during the month of October. In response to feedback expressing a preference for having these placed as consecutive days on the academic calendar to create a Fall Break, these days have been placed all within the week of October 17-21.
The incorporation of a Fall Break provides academic consistency that aligns with breaks following the end of each grading period. Fall break allows staff to make necessary academic planning and intervention adjustments for the next grading period. Placing the Parent and Teacher Conference on October 21 enables teachers to incorporate interim assessment data with academic progress from the first grading period in the progress update shared during the parent/teacher conference. Additionally, sophomores and juniors are scheduled to participate in college readiness exams on October 12, 2022.
-
What is the Parent Conference day scheduled on October 21?
We value communication and strong partnership with parents. October 21 is designated as a day for parent and teacher conferences. This provides an opportunity to review your child’s progress for the first nine-week grading period. The process and schedule for this day will be coordinated by your child’s teacher and/or campus. This is a school holiday for students.
-
Why is Spring Break scheduled for March 6-10? Could Spring Break be held a week later?
The dates for Spring Break align with the academic calendars of Collin College and several surrounding districts, which is beneficial to our staff and families. It is valuable to align our Spring Break with the Spring Break of Collin College in an effort to support our students who are enrolled in Dual Credit courses.
-
When will the high school graduation ceremony be held?
Graduation is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 26, 2023, at 7 p.m. at Eagle Stadium.
-
What happens if school is closed due to bad weather?
January 3 and April 10 are designated as bad weather make-up days. If only one day is required, April 10 will be used. The academic calendar reflects enough operational minutes to provide the district with the option to use accumulated operational minutes prior to officially using the two Bad Weather Days identified on the calendar. If there is a need to make-up operational minutes due to a weather incident, accumulated operational minutes will be used first.
-
Can the school district change the calendar after the school year has started to make up operational minutes that are lost due to an unforeseen event?
Yes. If extreme circumstances result in the loss of operational minutes, the district may add minutes to days remaining in the school year to make up for an unplanned event that caused a school to close during the school year.

Monday, March 6, 2023, is a student holiday.
