Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal law that protects the rights of students with disabilities. It ensures that disabled students receive educational benefits and opportunities that are equal to those of non-disabled peers.
The 504 Committee considers eligibility for students that have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities or bodily functions, have a record of such impairment, or be regarded as having such impairment.
Students can be referred for Section 504 evaluation by parents, teachers, or administrators. Parents will be notified of the referral. Once written consent is received, a Section 504 evaluation can be conducted.
