    2018-2019 Calendar Questions and Answers

Here are responses to some of the frequent questions we have received about the new calendar.

Did the length of the school year change?

The 2018-2019 academic calendar maintains 175 days of instruction.  The school year starts 3 days earlier and ends 5 days earlier on the 2018-19 calendar.

When will students be dismissed on early release days?

On early release days, students will be dismissed at the following times:

    • Elementary campuses - 12:00pm.
    • Middle School campuses - 12:30pm.
    • Lowery Freshman Center & Allen High School campuses - 1:00pm.

Will Kids Club services be available on early release days?

Yes. Students who are in Kids Club will be able to attend Kids Club once school is dismissed on early release days.

Will lunch be served on early release days?

Lunch will be served on elementary campuses.  An optional grab and go lunch will be available on secondary campuses.

Why is Spring Break scheduled for March 11 – 15?  Could Spring Break be held a week later?

The dates for Spring Break align to the academic calendars of Collin College and surrounding districts which is beneficial to our staff and families.  It is valuable to align our Spring Break with the Spring Break of Collin College in an effort to support our students who are enrolled in Dual Credit courses.

When will the high school graduation ceremony be held?

A graduation date for the Class of 2018-2019 has not been finalized.  The proposed date and time for graduation is May 24, 2019 at 7:30pm, which is the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

What happens if school is closed due to bad weather?

The calendar reflects enough operational minutes to provide the district the option to use accumulated operational minutes prior to officially using the two Bad Weather Days identified on the calendar.  April 19 and February 18 are bad weather make-up days.  In the event that a bad weather makeup day is needed, April 19 will be used first.

Can the school district change the calendar after the school year has started to make up operational minutes that are lost due to an unforeseen event?

Yes.  If extreme circumstances resulted in the loss of operational minutes, the district may add minutes to days remaining in the school year to make up for an unplanned event that caused a school to close during the school year.
