Vision and Hearing
These screenings are done throughout the year for new students and all students in 7th grade. Vision and/or hearing screenings may be done on any student at the request of a parent or teacher. The Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes is also completed at the same time as the vision and hearing screening for 7th grade students.
Texas Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes
The Texas Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes in Children (formerly the ANTES program) screens for Acanthosis Nigricans during the vision/hearing (7th grade). Acanthosis Nigricans, AN for short, is a skin condition that signals high insulin levels in the body. This state mandated program helps assess children who may be at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes. Children who are identified with the marker are also assessed for body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure. Risk assessments are issued to the parents of these children, alerting parents of the child's risk factors and encouraging further evaluation from a health professional.

Scoliosis
7th grade girls and 8th grade boys are screened for scoliosis in the fall semester.
