Welcome to the Bolin Dream Team! DT students will systematically, sequentially, and cumulatively learn new strategies to help them read and spell with confidence!
Dyslexia Therapy is, by far, the BEST, most rewarding teaching experience - period - but it took me a while to discover it. I actually started at Bolin as a student-teacher 16 years ago in second grade, then became a 2nd-grade classroom teacher for four years and moved on to teach students in K-6 that were struggling in reading and math through SSI for four more years. Before Bolin, I taught preschool at a Primrose School and at Apple Creek Private Preschool (now, Kindergarten Prep)l in Allen as well as taught college students at the University of North Texas in early childhood education. With dyslexia in my family, my teaching goal has always been to teach kids to love learning to read, however, that proved to be more difficult than I had imagined. It wasn't until I really learned how to teach reading through dyslexia therapy that I found the secret that has made all the difference.
With the encouragement of Sharon Laney (Bolin's prior Dyslexia Therapist), I pursued my dyslexia training to become a CALT (Certified Academic Language Therapist), at McKinney Christian Academy Multisensory Teacher Training (an accredited program of ALTA, IMSLEC, IDA, and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital) and continued training as a Qualified Instructor to help other teachers become dyslexia therapists, too. I completed that goal this summer, 2019. I am also a Licenced Dyslexia Therapist (LDT) with the State of Texas.
As a child, I grew up in Kansas in a small farming community and graduated from Emporia State University with a BS and MS degree in Psychology and Business. My teacher education came later at the University of North Texas.
I'm married to the most amazing husband, Terry - we'll celebrate 31 years this fall. I have two grown children, James, and Megan. James works in computer network management and Megan is a Junior at Texas Tech University. We are active in our church where my husband and I are involved with the youth. We have lived in the Plano/Allen area for over 25 years. My summers have become very busy training other educators to effectively teach reading through dyslexia therapy at MCA-MTT.
I enjoy movies, collecting MANY children's books, quilting, traveling (New York is one of my favorite places but our most recent trips are to Lubbock to see Megan and attend games at Texas Tech - Wreck Em!) and always - always learning new things. My classroom is decorated with owls to promote a scholarly theme (a carryover from Scott's Scholars when I taught 2nd grade.)
If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns - be sure to let me know! I'm here to support each student to become the best they can be!
