Three Allen ISD campuses have earned the top spots in the Texas Music Educators Association’s (TMEA) 2019-2020 Honor Full Orchestra Competition. Curtis Middle School was the top middle school symphony orchestra in the state, and Ereckson Middle School earned second place. Allen High School was named second best in the state in the high school division. The full orchestra combines strings from the orchestra and winds and percussion from the band.

As the state winners, Curtis Middle School will perform a concert for the TMEA members during their annual conference in February 2020 in San Antonio. Curtis has placed in the finals of the TMEA competition four times in the past five years.

Additionally, Curtis Middle School earned seventh place in the Honor String Orchestra Competition.

“An incredible amount of practice and hard work goes into winning these top awards from the Texas Music Educators Association,” Jeff Turner, Allen ISD Fine Arts Director, said. “I am proud of our students and directors for winning these awards, and I look forward to seeing Curtis Middle School perform for music teachers across Texas in February. This will be an amazing opportunity for those students.”

Orchestras entering the TMEA competition must submit a recording of a live, unedited concert. A judging panel listens to all of the submissions and selects the top six to eight groups. A second panel of judges listens to the finalist’s recordings and ranks them again until a winner is named.
