Allen ISD Board Named ‘School Board of the Year’ in H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards

Allen ISD Board Named ‘School Board of the Year’ in
 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards

It’s official: the best School Board in the State of Texas is right here in Allen. The Allen ISD Board of Trustees has been named the School Board of the Year in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program. The award was presented during the Excellence in Education Awards banquet on April 30 in Austin. The award also comes with a $25,000 prize for the school district.

Allen ISD was one of only five finalists for the prestigious award, including Frisco, Alvin, McAllen, and North East ISDs, out of more than 1,100 school boards across Texas. The top award was presented to the Allen ISD Board of Trustees for demonstrating leadership in the community, specifically in three key focus areas:

  • Academic/student progress within the district
  • Identification of community needs and specific actions taken based on those needs
  • New and creative methods for community engagement

“The Board of Trustees is only as strong as the support we receive from the community, and Allen ISD is so fortunate to have dedicated staff members, inspiring students, and encouraging families,” said Amy Gnadt, Allen ISD Board of Trustees President. “We are grateful that H-E-B has recognized the commitment that the AISD Trustees have for our schools. This award is truly a reflection of the hard work and collaboration that takes place every day between the Board, students, staff, and community members of this wonderful school district.”

The Allen ISD Board of Trustees was recognized, in part, for its focus on student progress, particularly within at-risk student populations. This was bolstered by the Board’s participation in the eXceptional Governance (XG) Board training offered by the Texas Association of School Boards. The XG Board Development incorporated prior independent research into a five-session, whole-board learning experience over a nine-month period, with each session customized to meet the development of the AISD Board of Trustees. The outcome of this work was a deeper understanding of the student performance measure and the board’s role in accountability.

The AISD Board of Trustees was also recognized for its emphasis on community engagement and outreach opportunities, which includes oversight and/or participation in the SOAR 2030 strategic visioning process, the AISD Leadership Academy, Board Academy, Silver Eagles, and Project Kids.

“The Board of Trustees are a cohesive, collaborative group who are solely focused on positively impacting the lives of our students and staff,” said Dr. Robin Bullock, Superintendent of Schools. “Through countless meetings and trainings, this Board prioritizes what is best for every single child in our school district. I am truly thankful to work alongside this supportive and caring Board.”

To determine overall statewide winners for the H-E-B Excellence in Education awards, a panel of judges visited each district to meet with the Board of Trustees and Superintendent and visit with administration, staff, parents, and community members. Since the program’s inception, H-E-B has awarded more than $12 million in funding to benefit outstanding Texas public schools.
