November 26, 2018 Board Meeting Summary
Board honors outstanding students & educators
Six students have been named to the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Orchestra. Allen High School and Lowery Freshman Center Orchestras participated in the TMEA All-State Orchestra contest over the November 3 – 4 weekend. After State Region auditions, 879 eligible Orchestra students from across Texas entered recordings of their audition performances for evaluation. This is the highest number of stringed instrument musicians Allen ISD has placed in the TMEA All-State Orchestras in its history. These students will perform at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio on February 16, 2019.
Congratulations to the following students! Edward Cho, violin (4 year All-State member); Lauren Jin, violin Wenting Du, violin; Joie Cheng, viola; Grace Droge, string bass (LFC) and Nicholas Payne, string bass.
State Science Award
Allen ISD Science Coordinator Jason Baughman has received the STAT (Science Teachers Association of Texas) Distinguished Leadership in Science Award. The award recognizes outstanding support of science education at the district or state level by a non-teaching administrator in Early Childhood through Grade 12. He was officially recognized at the organization’s conference on November 1.
State UIL Cross Country Qualifiers
Jonathan Chung and Brenna Zerby are being recognized for qualifying and participating in the UIL State Cross Country Meet in Round Rock, Texas on November 3, 2018.
Employees of the Month
Each month, the Allen ISD Human Resources Department recognizes one elementary teacher, one secondary teacher, and two district employees (anyone other than a classroom teacher) as the Employees of the Month. The monthly recognitions are sponsored by The Foundation For Allen Schools and Credit Union of Texas.
The Board of Trustees was proud to recognize the following honorees:
- Elementary Teacher of the Month: Lori Hicks, Kindergarten Teacher at Boyd Elementary
- Secondary Teacher of the Month: Wes Byers, Business Information Management Teacher at Ereckson Middle School
- Employee of the Month: Juanita Joseph, Nurse at Lindsey Elementary
- Employee of the Month: Sandy Lowstetter, Lead Behavior Support Team – Special Services Department.
Board Receives Construction Update
Daniel Pitcock, assistant superintendent for operations, reported on the various construction projects completed this summer and underway. STEAM Center construction is nearing completion. The building is set to open in January 2019. A certificate of occupancy is expected to be granted in december 2018. Ereckson Stadium project is underway with track, field and bleachers in place. Lighting will soon be installed. Old Lowery Center demolition is underway. A major portion of the building is being demolished while two wings will be renovated for use as a future Dillard Center site.
Projects In Planning Include:
Lowery Stadium Renovation
Allen High School F Hall Renovation
Marion Elementary School Renovation
Technology/Professional development Center and Board Room Renovation and Construction (old Dillard Center)
These projects will be presented to the Board of Trustees for consideration in December 2018 - May 2019.
Trustees Accept Legislative Priorities from Legislative Focus Group
The Board of Trustees accepted the Legilsative Priorities that were created by the Allen ISD Legislative Focus Group. The Legislative Focus Group was formed at the beginning of the school year and is comprised of teachers, staff members, and administrators from across the district who volunteered to join the group. The group’s goal was to determine the legislative issues that are most important to the employees of Allen ISD.
The Legislative Focus Group proposed three areas of focus for the 86th Legislative Session: Increase Funding, Equitable Funding, and Protect TRS Retirement. Detail is included in the Board meeting documents.

The next regular meeting of the Allen ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled for Monday, December 17, 2018, at 7 p.m. at Allen City Hall.
