May 20, 2019 Board Meeting Summary
Board swears in two members, elects officers
Board members Amy Gnadt (place 4) and Kelley Rowley (place 5) were officially sworn into office for another 3-year term. Both Gnadt and Rowley were re-elected after running unopposed in the May 2019 election.
The Board of Trustees also held elections for Board Officer positions. John Montgomery was elected Board President, Amy Gnadt was elected Board Vice President, and Kelley Rowley was elected Board Secretary.
Board honors outstanding students & educators
Texas State Science and Engineering Fair Competition
Allen ISD students competed at the Texas State Science and Engineering Fair in College Station at Texas A&M on March 30. These students advanced from the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair (DRFES). Nidhi Kalyanpur, a 6th grader at Boon Elementary, competed in the Junior Division Energy: Chemical category with her project “This Nut is on Fire” and won second place in her category.
Eagles Soccer Team Reaches Final Four
The Lady Eagles varsity soccer team advanced to the UIL 6A final four this spring. They defeated Naaman Forest, Longview, Tyler Lee, Round Rock and Rockwall Heath in the playoffs before falling to Katy Tompkins High School in the state semifinals in Georgetown. The Lady Eagles ended the season with a record of 20-5-2 record. The team is coached by Kelly Thompson – Head Coach, Christina Hutchinson, assistant and JV coaches Kevin Albury and Shawn Shannon.
PCAT Bus Driver of the Year
Allen bus driver Ismael Boye, was named Property Casualty Alliance Texas (PCAT) Bus Driver of the Year. The award is presented to honor his leadership, attitude, perseverance, student and parent relationships, and technical skills.
Middle School Boys Archery
Michael Mayfield, an Ereckson Middle School 8th grader, won second place in the Western National NASP IBO 3-D Middle School Boys Archery Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah, with a score of 291/300. Michael also won fourth place in the Bullseye Middle School Boys NASP Western National Division Archery Championship with a score of 288/300.
Employees of the Month
Each month, the Allen ISD Human Resources Department recognizes one elementary teacher, one secondary teacher, and two district employees (anyone other than a classroom teacher) as the Employees of the Month. The monthly recognitions are sponsored by The Foundation For Allen Schools and Credit Union of Texas.
The Board of Trustees was proud to recognize the following honorees:
Elementary Teacher of the Month: Meghan Groat at Anderson Elementary.
Secondary Teacher of the Month: Heath Anderson at Ereckson Middle School.
Employee of the Month: Phyllis Spain in the Student Services Department.
Employee of the Month: Natalie Smith in the Technology Department.
Board Receives Budget and Legislative Update
The School Board was provided an update on budgetary and legislative matters from Greg Cartwright, Chief Financial Officer, Dr. Maroba Zoeller, Chief Governmental Relations Officer, and Deron Robinson, General Counsel. The Board heard updates on several education-related bills, including the senate and house bills that are aimed at supporting the school-funding formula.
Board Approves Purchase of Social and Emotional Learning Materials
The Board of Trustees approved the purchase of instructional materials and training for social and emotional needs of students. The instructional materials will help with self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. Programs to be inplemented will be: Second Step EC-5 and Grades 6-8; School Connect 9, School Connect 10-12 and MBSR-T Training 10-12
The total cost of the materials and training is $177,072.
Board Approves Purchase of Kitchen Equipment
The School Board approved the purchase of cafeteria serving line equipment at Marion Elementary, and kitchen equipment at Bolin, Anderson, and Kerr Elementary schools. Allen ISD received quotes from seven vendors, and the Board approved the purchase of $121,066 in equipment from Mission Restaurant Supply.
Board Approves TASB Advocacy Resolution
The Board of Trustees approved an advocacy resolution that will be presented to the Texas Association of Schools Boards’ Delegate Assembly. The resolution states that Texas Legislation should fund TRS ActiveCare at a level equal to ERS Health Insurance, combine the two, or alternatively, allow schools to opt out of TRS ActiveCare.
The resolution will be reviewed by the TASB Resolutions Committee and thereafter by the TASB Board.

The next regular meeting of the Allen ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled for Monday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at Allen City Hall.
