The Allen Eagles opened the 2026 football season with a statement Friday night, defeating the Duncanville Panthers 26-7 in front of the home crowd at Eagle Stadium.
The Aug. 28 matchup brought together two of the state’s most accomplished high school football programs and served as a rematch of last season’s Class 6A Division 1 state semifinal.
For Head Coach Lee Wiginton and the Eagles, Friday’s victory represented an important step forward for a team that has spent the offseason preparing for another opportunity.
“It always feels good when you’re able to get a win, especially against that caliber,” Wiginton said. “They eliminated us from the playoffs last year. We knew that our program had to really find a way to take a step, and the guys have worked so hard. This is a great first step. It really is.”
Allen’s defense set the tone, holding Duncanville to 163 yards of total offense and 65 rushing yards while recording eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Senior defensive lineman Beckham Parker led the second-half effort with 3 sacks and 5 tackles for loss.
Offensively, sophomore quarterback Ty Snell threw 163 yards and two touchdowns, while Zach Williams recorded seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Lyndon Spriggs added 61 rushing guards and 2 touchdowns, including a late score that helped seal the 26-7 victory. The win extended Allen’s regular-season winning streak to 22 games, but Wiginton emphasized that one game in August does not define where the Eagles, nor their opponent, will be later in the season.
“We’re not naive. We know that Duncanville will be a whole lot better when they’re deeper in the season,” Wiginton said. “We just hope that we are too, and I feel very confident that we are going to improve.”
That opportunity for growth is part of what has Wiginton encouraged after the first game of the season. While there are still areas to improve, he said that the effort and confidence his players showed Friday night stood out.
“They play so passionately. You see them play hard and you see them play with confidence,” Wiginton said proudly. “We play hard, and that’s fun to watch.”
For the Eagles, the win marked the kind of first step they spent an offseason working toward. The team will look to build that momentum on Friday, Sept. 4, when they face the DeSoto Eagles in another early-season test.
