Author W. Bruce Cameron visited multiple schools, engaging students with stories, discussion, and insights into writing, imagination, and his new book, Stella: Ranch Patrol.

Author W. Bruce Cameron, widely known for A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Way Home, visited Story, Boyd, Bolin, and Chandler Elementary Schools as well as Curtis Middle School this week. His presentations combined storytelling, interactive discussion, and a preview of his latest book, Stella: Ranch Patrol.

During his visits, Cameron emphasized his preference for engaging directly with students rather than lecturing. He encouraged children to ask questions, explaining that he wanted to hear what they were most interested in learning about writing, books, and characters.

As part of the program, Cameron shared the inspiration for his newest character, Stella the corgi. He described how Stella, raised alongside Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, believes she too can protect against predators on a South Dakota ranch. Through anecdotes and a short video, he highlighted the contrast between the corgi’s small size and her big determination.

Students also asked about Cameron’s writing process, his use of real animals for inspiration, and his past experiences making book-to-film adaptations. He spoke about Shelby, a rescue dog who starred in A Dog’s Way Home and later inspired Shelby’s Story.

The author closed each session by reminding students that writing is rooted in imagination, and that every story begins with asking questions and exploring ideas.
